The history of Raja of Lalbaug dates back to 1934.

 Watch A group of fishermen vowed to install a statue of Ganesha in the Lalbaug market. The market was closed in 1932 and the fishermen believed that Ganesha would help them rebuild it The first statue of the Lalbaugcha king was created by sculptor Madhusudan Kamli of the Kambli family. It was made of them and was only 5 feet high however soon became popular among the local people. The idol is displayed in a specially constructed pandal in Lalbaugh market and attracts more than 1.5 million devotees every year. The Lalbaugcha Raja Utsav with people coming and going is a testament to the popularity of the darshan. Lalbaugcha Raja brings hope and faith to many.

The belief that this idol of Ganesha is, Navasacha Ganpati (Marathi: नवसाचा गणपती) (which means the "one who fulfils all wishes") draws over 1.5 million pilgrims to the idol's display area daily during the 10-day Ganesha Chaturthi festival.

As of 2023, the Lalbaugcha Raja has entered 90 years.
